Redstone Federal Credit Union provides lifesaving CPR kits to local school students

May 24, 2021 – Students at Madison and Huntsville schools received a life-saving gift from Redstone Federal Credit Union Monday. The credit union partnered with the American Heart Association to provide CPR Anytime Kits for five local high schools.

“More than 350,000 people suffer out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest each year. Nearly 90 percent don’t survive,’’ said Stephanie Cline at the American Heart Association. “One of the best ways to change that is to create a whole new generation of lifesavers beginning with our local students,” Cline said.

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time. It is most often caused by a heart attack, but it can also be caused by trauma, an overdose or drowning. In sudden cardiac arrest, the heart stops beating; blood stops circulating; oxygen stops flowing to the brain; and the victim stops breathing. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.

Students are capable of learning and effectively performing CPR. The American Heart Association wants all students and educators to learn CPR, putting more qualified lifesavers in our communities. The easy-to-use CPR in Schools Training Kit is designed precisely for educational environments and can be facilitated by anyone. The kit contains everything needed to train 10 to 20 people at once in CPR. Kits were distributed to Bob Jones, James Clemons, Hazel Green, Sparkman and Jemison high schools.

Mary Grace Evans, RFCU Assistant Vice President of Community Relations, said Redstone saw this gift as another opportunity to support students and our community.

“Redstone has a strong relationship with our schools, providing students with the tools that empower them to make wise financial choices. Donating CPR kits to our students is another way to invest in them and equip them,’’ Evans said. “These kits can teach them how to save a life.’’
