Scottsboro High School student branch celebrates with ribbon-cutting

Sept. 20, 2023 _ Redstone Federal Credit Union® joined with Scottsboro area leaders Wednesday to celebrate the opening of a branch inside Scottsboro High School that is fully operated by students.

A ribbon-cutting was held Wednesday at the student-run branch -- the first in Jackson County. Student tellers gain real-life work experience, improve their financial literacy, and earn money while training.

The branch is open to students, faculty, and staff at the school.

Starting in 2024, Alabama students will be required to take courses in financial literacy before graduating and these branches boost the financial know-how of the participating students.

Joe Newberry, Redstone’s President and CEO, said the Credit Union is excited about the partnership and collaboration with Scottsboro High School.

Scottsboro City Schools Superintendent Amy Childress agreed, adding Redstone’s Schools Program is a “testament to the power of collaboration and forward thinking.’’ The skills the student tellers are learning are directly transferrable to their future careers, she added.

Redstone has installed branches in eight high schools in North Alabama and Murfreesboro, TN. The Schools Program has been recognized by the Alabama
