Redstone’s AAMU student-run branch celebrates 5 years

March 21, 2023 _ Redstone Federal Credit Union and Alabama A&M University are celebrating five years of partnership and student success on March 22, 2023, from 11am to 1pm, at the AAMU campus branch.

The AAMU branch, located in the Knight Center, was Redstone’s first on a university campus. It is staffed primarily by AAMU students and provides service and convenience to the university’s students, faculty and staff.

In addition to bringing work experience and career opportunities, the branch’s affiliate debit card has generated $159,286 in revenue for the university since it was introduced. Each time a Redstone member uses the affinity debit card linked to AAMU, Redstone contributes money back to the university.

At the time of the branch’s opening in 2018, Joe Newberry, Redstone’s President and CEO, said it was an exciting initiative intended to build partnerships and relationships while advancing financial education.

“It has definitely built and strengthened relationships, and so much more,’’ Newberry said in celebration of its five-year anniversary. “We have opened hundreds of accounts here, worked with some incredible students over the years, and are thrilled that five of those students decided to come work with us full-time,’’ said Newberry. “These students really work – they learn what credit union operations are and how to run their branch.”

The branch is part of Redstone’s Schools Programs that provides high school and college students hands-on work experience at the credit union branches on their campuses; and helps them develop important soft skills – behaviors around how we interact effectively and harmoniously with others.

Wanda Nance, an AAMU alumnus, is the branch manager.

Kayla Jackson, AAMU senior, joined Redstone at the campus branch because it was so convenient.

“Lots of students don’t have a car and it’s important for them to have a safe place for their money and for their parents who want to send money,’’ Jackson said. “But it’s not just the convenience, the branch staff really makes you feel welcome. Ms. Wanda is always there for you and gives you motivational talks when you need them,’’ she said.

She is looking forward to the branch celebration.
