Decatur celebrates opening of Redstone branches in two high schools

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Nov. 20, 2018)

Redstone Federal Credit Union® and the Decatur School System celebrated the opening of two student-run credit union branches located inside Decatur High and Austin High schools.

These are the second and third branches Redstone has opened inside high schools through strategic partnerships with the school systems. The first school branch is located at Hartselle High School. All branches are run by students.

“At these branches, students get hands-on experience to complement their classroom instruction,’’ said Joe Newberry, Redstone President and CEO.

“Once they have successfully worked in their school branches, they also have the ability to be hired to work in our branches during the summer months or after graduation.’’

Dr. Tommy Davis, Secondary Curriculum & Testing Supervisor for Decatur schools, worked closely with Redstone to get the branches up and running. The ‘branch in the school’ program also helps students develop their soft skills or people skills, he said.

Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce officials thanked Redstone for “stepping up early’’ to become a strategic partner with the Decatur schools.

Redstone's strategic partnership started long before it opened branches in the high schools.

Its 6th Avenue Branch in Decatur adopted Woodmeade Elementary School about six years ago to help sponsor students who wanted to attend Space Camp. Now, Manager Lorri McNutt and staff help the school with everything from field day to Teacher Appreciation Day.

At the Beltline Branch, Scott Foster and his staff, have been equally as involved with their school: West Morgan Elementary.

Providing financial education to students is central to Redstone's vision for the communities it serves.

Redstone’s team of Financial Education Specialists present financial literacy workshops to schools, colleges and universities, non-profits organizations, and businesses. Redstone also hosts numerous seminars each month to help the public improve their finances.

“We are excited about this partnership and believe the community will reap the benefits of a financially prepared generation,’’ said Newberry. More school branches are planned for 2019.
