HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Redstone Federal Credit Union celebrated the grand opening of its 10th student-run high school branch today at Mae Jemison High School—the very first within Huntsville City Schools.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together community leaders, educators, and students to mark a milestone in financial education and workforce development. Attendees included Mayor Tommy Battle, Councilmember Michelle Watkins, Superintendent Dr. Clarence Sutton, and school board member Chaundra Jones, along with Principal Demetris Harris-Leverette and Redstone team members.
“Redstone Federal Credit Union has long been a valued community partner, and its 10 student-run branches are perfect examples of their commitment to our young people,’’ said Mayor Battle.
Joe Newberry, Redstone’s President and CEO, said the Credit Union is proud to partner with Huntsville City Schools. “Opening this branch is about more than access to financial services—it’s about preparing students for brighter futures,” Newberry said.
The Jemison High School branch is part of Redstone’s growing Schools Program, which launched in 2017 to give students hands-on work experience and essential financial knowledge. Student-workers learn skills that prepare them for future careers.
"This partnership with Redstone Federal Credit Union is an incredible opportunity for our students to gain hands-on experience in financial literacy, customer service, and career readiness,’’ said Superintendent Sutton. “By bringing a student-run branch into Mae C. Jemison High School, we are equipping students with practical workplace skills and empowering them to build confidence and responsibility that will serve them long after graduation,’’ Sutton said.
In addition to the new branch, Jemison High students, faculty, staff and alumni can also apply for a Redstone debit card featuring the school’s mascot. Each time this specially designed card is used, Redstone donates cash back to the school system.
