Redstone Federal Credit Union to award $70,000 in scholarship money

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Dec. 20, 2018) Redstone Federal Credit Union® is excited to announce that it has increased its individual scholarship awards to $5,000, for a total of $70,000 to be awarded for the 2019-2020 school year.

Members who are currently enrolled in or accepted to an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program are encouraged to apply at redfcu.org/scholarship. The application process is open now through February 28, 2019. Redstone will award 14 scholarships.

Taylor Felts, an Auburn University student and 2018 Redstone scholarship recipient, said the scholarship helped her cover expenses, such as books and room and board, which her partial academic scholarship did not.

“I would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to apply for this scholarship to do so,’’ Felts said. “I truly never believed that I would receive such a prestigious award, but the saying, ‘you never know unless you try,’ comes into play here.’’

Redstone has awarded more than $537,000 in scholarships since the program’s inception in 1996. Award amounts ranged from $2,000 - $4,650 over that time.

“We want to help our young members continue their education,’’ said Joe Newberry, Redstone’s president and CEO. “Our scholarship makes an immediate impact on the student’s ability to finish a semester or steer clear of student loan debt.’’

Of the 14 scholarships, seven are designated for members attending Redstone’s partner schools and seven are for members attending any other accredited college or university.

The partner schools are: Alabama A&M University, Calhoun Community College, University of Alabama in Huntsville, Drake State Community and Technical College, Middle Tennessee State University, Athens State University, and Oakwood University.

Recipients will be announced in late May and the funds will be available for the fall 2019 school year.
