August 1,2025 — One young student beamed with joy as she swapped out her plain water bottle for the colorful, name-brand version she really wanted while shopping with her mom. It was a small upgrade that made a big difference thanks to Redstone Federal Credit Union’s Acts of Brightness campaign which surprised local teachers and students with free school supplies.
As families filled Walmart and Target aisles during Tennessee’s tax-free weekend, they were delighted to be greeted by a group of smiling faces in bright blue shirts, ready to pay for their items.
Dozens of children received backpacks, pencils, notebooks, and more; completely paid for by Redstone. Parents stood in disbelief. Children beamed as this gave them a chance to truly browse and pick out items they wanted. The credit union’s Brightness Crews were right there with them, helping them choose supplies, wishing them good luck on their upcoming school year, and stepping up at the register with a simple message of “We want to brighten your day.”
Redstone’s Acts of Brightness originally began in 2017 as a small gesture tied to Random Acts of Kindness Day. Over time it blossomed into one of Redstone’s most popular ‘give-back’ initiatives. This summer alone, Redstone spent more than $30,000 on surprise giveaways for the Smyrna community.
Maddy Springs, a teacher at Simon Springs Community School, says the purchases were a ‘blessing.’ She only planned to make a quick trip to Walmart for a few small items. To her surprise, she was able to get much more than planned, including a new laptop. “I've been using a school-issued laptop and planned to ask for one as a birthday or Christmas gift this year, but to be able to receive one right now was truly a blessing,” Maddy said.
Thanks to Redstone’s support, Maddy was also able to pick up school supplies for her mother and two younger brothers. Maddy says growing up she was taught to do good and treat everyone with kindness. Redstone’s Acts of Brightness Campaign is a reminder that “there is good in the world, and it does indeed come back.”
This event marked the finale of Redstone’s summer-long campaign in celebration of its newest branch at 2005 Huggin Lane. Over the last few weeks, the Brightness Crew showed up unannounced at gas stations, grocery stores, and even Smyrna utilities. No membership required; Redstone simply wanted to brighten the days of Smyrna locals. Everywhere they went, their blue shirts became a symbol of kindness without strings attached.
