Breakfast is something many of us partake in every day. It might not seem very important, but to some foster children, eating breakfast every day is a luxury they might not have always had. The Impact of a Breakfast: Charity Finders and Alabama MENTOR

January 25, 2017

The Redstone Charity Finders group had a great time helping out at the Alabama MENTOR Holiday Party.

Breakfast is something many of us partake in every day. It might not seem very important, but to some foster children, eating breakfast every day is a luxury they might not have always had. This is the case for some foster children in our area, and one of the many reasons why Alabama MENTOR exists.

Alabama MENTOR serves children, adolescents and teens with social, emotional and behavioral challenges, as well as other complex needs. The program provides help to youth who require a higher level of care and clinical support than traditional foster care models. Its Therapeutic Foster Care program serves children of all ages and backgrounds who have often experienced abuse or neglect, trauma, family separation, multiple foster care placements or placements in more restrictive environments. Older youth can participate in the Transitional Living Program, which teaches skills needed for independent living.

"We call our foster parents Mentors because they do so much more than provide a foster home—they help children learn and grow, forever changing their lives."

The program also provide community-based foster care to children with a wide range of medical conditions through their Medically Complex Foster Care program. They provide 24-hour, home-base monitoring, nurturing support, medication management and many other important services to children with conditions like cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis.

When Redstone Charity Finders leader Anthony Cox heard about Alabama MENTOR for the first time, he knew he needed to find a way to help this much-deserving organization. Charity Finders is a Redstone employee group focused on helping local charities. The Madison branch of Alabama MENTOR currently helps 55 foster parents and 30 foster children through its wide variety of programs and services. Each year, it holds two very special events for the families they serve. Charity Finders was honored to help them during their holiday party this past December.

Our Charity Finders group loved serving breakfast for the foster families at the Alabama MENTOR holiday party.
The event’s theme this year was “A Night Before Christmas”. Six Redstone Charity Finders volunteers headed over to Real Estate Row and cooked up some delicious pancakes for the children and families. They also handed out Santa hats and candy canes to all the children. During the event, the children were read the story “A Night Before Christmas” and each given a new set of pajamas. It was a wonderful event that we hope to participate in for many years to come!

Alabama MENTOR offers a range of flexible programs and uses a partnership approach to care. This approach enables them to meet the changing needs of children and families in collaboration with their Mentors and other service providers. As a central partner in a child’s overall treatment team, Alabama MENTOR helps to “Bring Caring Closer” and ensure that the best interests of children are the driving force behind everything they do.
