HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology has a big announcement to share with the community.

Imagine how different life would be if you could take a genetic test that screened for cancer. Think about how much this could impact your health and well-being. This isn't something you need to imagine, because the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology has made it a reality.

Screenings That Save Lives: Redstone's Partnership with HudsonAlpha

September 27, 2016

HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology has announced it will extend its community cancer risk genetic testing thanks to help from Redstone.

Imagine how different life would be if you could take a genetic test that screened for cancer. Think about how much this could impact your health and well-being. This isn't something you need to imagine, because the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology has made it a reality.

We are proud to sponsor HudsonAlpha's unique breast and ovarian cancer genetic risk testing initiative Information is Power. This ground-breaking screening tests for mutations in the well-known BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, as well as additional genes linked to other cancers. The initiative was set to end in October of this year, but thanks to Redstone's generous sponsorship it will be extended and expanded.

"Now with Redstone’s support, we are able to offer free testing to 30-year-old women and men in the surrounding counties as well,"
Kimberly Strong, PhD, HudsonAlpha faculty investigator and director of the Ethics and Genomics Program.

"This type of testing is traditionally done in a context where a person has a family history of cancer, and this initiative makes testing available to people in the community regardless of family history,” said Kimberly Strong, PhD, HudsonAlpha faculty investigator and director of the Ethics and Genomics Program.

For one year starting on October 29, 2016, free testing will be available to 30-year-old women and men who reside in Madison, Jackson, Limestone, Marshall and Morgan Counties. Genetic testing company Kailos Genetics is a collaborator in the project and developed the genetic screening tool.

HudsonAlpha extends the Info is Power Initiative and will be offering free testing to 30-year old men and women in Madison, Jackson, Limestone, Marshall, and Morgan Counties!

"We understand the importance of being knowledgeable about your health and risks to your health,” said Joseph Newberry, President and CEO of RFCU. “We also understand that for many in our community, access to such information can be challenging. This is Redstone Federal Credit Union’s way of helping to build a healthy and strong community, and we are happy to do it.’’

“Our mission is to give people insight into their genetic data to help them make smarter, more informed decisions for their health,” said Troy Moore, chief scientific officer of Kailos Genetics. “Now that we’ve started to see the life changing impacts of the Information is Power initiative, we are excited to give even more people access to these benefits.”

We are happy to help support HudsonAlpha with Information is Power and know this will have a positive impact throughout our community and help many with their health and well-being.

Phase two of Information is Power will being on October 29, 2016. For more information on the program, see the FAQs. We urge everyone to sign up for the screening, which is free for 30-year-old women and men who reside in Madison, Jackson, Limestone, Marshall and Morgan Counties and offered at a reduced cost to those 19+ in the same counties.
