Joe Newberry gives his closing remarks during the Chamber's 2017 annual meeting.

We are excited to share the news that our CEO, Joe Newberry, is the 2017 Board Chair of the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County. Joe has been heavily involved with the Chamber since 1987, and describes the Chamber as a catalyst for our community. "Our Chamber is a catalyst, a way to change our community for the better—forever," he said in his closing remarks during the Chamber's 81st annual membership meeting.

Learn more about Joe, his community experience and his leadership plans for the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County below. Content is adapted from the article A Chat with Joe Newberry, published in the February 2017 issue of Initiatives magazine and written by Kimberly Ballard.

"I got involved with the Chamber in 1987 when my boss, who was also a chairman of the Chamber, asked me to create a team to sell Chamber memberships," Joe shares. The team he created broke the record for selling memberships, and Joe's understanding of the importance of Chamber membership helped his team see success. "It brings economic development to your community, along with rising tax revenues that pay for infrastructure, like roads and parks. Those things affect your family and quality of life."

He explains that the Chamber is a catalyst, and should be important to all those in the Tennessee Valley community. "Tennessee Valley businesses owe it to their employees, their children, and future generations to build a healthy economy. The Chamber, with support from City, County, State, and Federal resources, is the catalyst to make that happen."

One of Joe's goals this year for the Chamber is to continue to add value to Chamber membership. He also wants to diversify the job opportunities in our community. "Fifty percent of our economy is based on DOD and NASA. Many factors can change that rather quickly, so the Chamber is always assertively looking at ways to diversify. A good example of us effectively doing that is in advanced manufacturing."

Joe knows the kind of resources and capabilities the Chamber offers its members. "There is a wealth of practical and strategic information available through the Chamber to help businesses grow and build relationships with customers and potential customers. We have to make sure that is out front," he says.
