How to Successfully Launch a Business: The Juicery Shares Their Redstone Story

As we celebrate 65 years of serving the Tennessee Valley, we want to highlight those who have partnered with us to support our local communities. Here is The Juicery's Redstone story, in the words of Jacob Birmingham, co-owner of The Juicery with his wife Karynthia:

When my wife Karynthia received a congratulatory letter informing her she officially graduated with a Masters in Nutrition, I asked one simple question: "What do you want to be when YOU grow up?" Her answer has forever changed the course of my family and the direction toward better health in our local community. She said without hesitation, "I really want to make Juice for people to drink that is raw, healthy and awesome. I've been thinking about it for months but didn't want to say anything." Done. The events that transpired in the days, weeks and months to follow were no less than pure divine inspiration and blind faith.

I turned down a job offer almost the same day she earned her degree, and the following week we went to Sprouts for their grand opening in Madison, AL. That's when we also called the commercial lease number on the window next door, because my wife believed this location was PERFECT! Less than five days later, we cashed out our savings and retirement fund, signed a commercial lease and drafted an entire business plan to present to a bank. But which bank? There were so many to choose!

The last step, or perhaps the first step that most traditional, wise and conservative business folks would make, when starting a business in 10 days or less—get financing support! We were in such a hurry to get financing; we didn't know who or where to turn to for financing. So why not ask the financial institute whom we've trusted our one and only other business account? Redstone Federal Credit Union® was the simple immediate answer.

Until now, Redstone Federal Credit Union's Business Solutions has allowed me to keep a very inactive business account open with them, which supported our free mobile app called KiDebit. KiDebit is a free app and educational tool that teaches young children about the value of money, and helps parents like myself, pay my kids with virtual money, instead of cash. We've mailed thousands of free kid cards that all have unique QR codes on them that kids then use to scan and view their virtual balance, backed by the Bank of Mom and Dad!

Good fortune and sacrifice has an amazing and divine way of returning the investment of KiDebit back to our family, not in the form of money but opportunity!  KiDebit enabled us to make the smartest financial decision we could have ever made in starting The Juicery, it guided us and enabled us to immediately use Redstone Federal Credit Union as our final key to successfully launching our business!

Redstone Federal Credit Union and Neil Carville's team not only walked us through the entire complicated government funding process for a Small Business Administration loan, they were able to support every requirement we had with the commercial landlord and our construction company, Crews INC. RFCU® was extremely easy to work with and made sure our concerns and needs were taken care of, no matter if it was negotiating a new purchase order or answering a simple email question about the definition of an acronym. They were always responsive, helpful and most importantly really cared about our success. We were blessed to have RFCU and our construction company Crews INC, who like RFCU, were extremely understanding, flexible, affordable, honest and most importantly, friendly.

The Juicery produces delicious, fresh, and nutritious cold-pressed juice. Our decision to go cold-press for juicing was always the path my wife wanted to take, and I again followed her direction. She knew how squeezing raw fruits and vegetables with 1800 pounds per square inch creates the highest possible quality of juice, with 3-5 times more nutrients and live enzymes in every bottle, which is more convenient for pickup and has a longer-lasting taste. We spent several months travelling to cities like Birmingham, Atlanta, Chattanooga, Nashville and even further west to California and Nevada visiting juicery and juice bar establishments.  About the time we were finished traveling the country, taking notes, adopting creative ideas and sipping about every awesome juice you could imagine, we polished off our cold-press Juicery recipes and our Juicery build-out was complete.

Thanks to RFCU and others, my family is helping educate our local community about nutrition, and cold-press juice so others like myself here in North Alabama can really understand and love the cold-press squeeze.
