How to Extend the Life of Your Vehicle

October 26, 2016

Get the most enjoyment and life out of your car by doing these 5 things.

Your vehicle is an important part of your everyday life. It takes you to all the places you need to go, from work and school to visiting family and friends, heading off on a road trip or a simple run to the store. Whether you have a truck, car, van or SUV, you want to get the most out of your vehicle. But how?

Our Redstone Discounts!® partner Huntsville Automotive gives us the scoop. What’s the secret? Adam Watson, owner of Huntsville Automotive, and his team share 5 tips to help you extend the life of your vehicle. With over 55 years of combined experience, they know exactly what will make your car run efficiently for years to come.

  1. Get oil and filter changes on a regular and consistent interval. The engine oil will break down starting at 3,000 miles for standard oil. Once this occurs, the lubricating qualities of the oil are reduced, and the engine will begin to burn the oil. This is the one of the top causes of engine failure seen in repair shops.

  1. Allow ample time for your vehicle to reach operating temperature before hard driving. Simply taking the first five miles of the morning commute a little slower will allow fluid temperatures to reach a normal temperature. Fluids at normal temperatures are able to protect critical driveline components better than cold fluids. A simple rule of thumb is to wait until the heater is producing heat before you accelerate hard.

  1. Keep your vehicle clean. One of the overlooked items in vehicle maintenance is the exterior of the vehicle. Leaving a vehicle dirty will allow weather seals to fail prematurely and promote rust. Make a regular schedule for washing your vehicle and always wash after long trips. Take special care to wash off any road grime in the winter that may have salt in it.

  1. Never ignore warning signs. These can include a light illuminating on the dash or an odd noise that is not normal. You know your own vehicle, so if something seems a little off, make sure it is checked by a qualified mechanic. Anytime a warning light comes on, there is a problem that should be checked.

  1. Have an annual inspection done on your vehicle. If you have your oil changed at a dealership or certified independent shop, this inspection is done at that time but many people change the oil in vehicles themselves or use a speedy oil change place. If this the case, make sure to schedule an appointment once a year to have a thorough inspection completed.
