Charity Finders, a Redstone employee group focused on helping local charities, held their May “Donation Journey” for First Stop, a charity established in 2001 to help support and empower homeless persons throughout Huntsville/Madison County. Their goal is to help the homeless find confidence and strength to take control over their own life or situation. They provide case managers, create employment options, help facilitate the transition from the street to permanent housing, and provide life-management-skills training.

The team gathered personal care items, blankets, and tarps over the course of a few weeks from employees throughout the credit union. They then headed to First Stop on May 19th to help serve the homeless a freshly made lunch and learn more about First Stop and those they help support.

9 Redstone employees and two volunteers helped serve over 100 meals to those in need at First Stop.Nine Redstone employees and two volunteers gathered at First Stop to serve BBQ, hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, cookies, and drinks to those in need. Redstone employee Valerie Moore even made some of her famous coleslaw, fondly nicknamed “Valerieslaw”. It was such a hit people showed up just to grab some slaw!

A First Stop client named John taught the team all of the ins and outs of grilling during the event. “He was truly a grill master. He told us how much charcoal to use, how long to let it heat up, and how we can keep the BBQ warm.  I learned a lot from him,” Charity Finders member Anthony Cox said.

A family thanks Redstone by singing several songs. After serving over 100 meals, a family wanted to thank the credit union for providing lunch. John and his wife Bianca, along with their three children, offered their thanks to Redstone by singing several songs for the group. “It was so peaceful and the best atmosphere listening to them sing.  Their children were so good. I felt a blessing from them,” said Karen Krakus, another Charity Finders member.

Redstone employee Jonathan purchased one fo First Stop's Palletable Alternatives end tables. Once the meal and singing finished, the Executive Director of First Stop, Clete Wetli, gave Charity Finders a tour. They visited the greenhouse and gardens along with the wood-working shop. Several men were working in the wood shop as part of the “Palletable Alternatives” furniture building project. First Stop clients build the furniture from cable spools and pallet wood in exchange for monetary donations. “The end tables and chairs were beautiful. I am even considering going back and buying from them,” Karen says.

Charity Finders will forever remember the day they served at First Stop. Learn more about First Stop, shop their furniture store, or volunteer/donate today! They would love for you to help them make an impact and empower the homeless in our community.
