Use these 5 tips to keep your information safe when online shopping.

Tis the season for lots of things: holiday dinners, gingerbread, scarves, and of course online shopping. Many of us may do some, if not all, of our holiday shopping online. According to the National Retail Federation, 121 million people were planning to shop online during Cyber Monday in 2015. If you do any of your shopping online, do you know how to stay safe?

Simply keep these helpful tips in mind next time you are online shopping to keep your information safe and protect yourself from online fraud and identity theft.

1. Use different passwords for accounts

A simple way to keep your information secure is to use different passwords for separate accounts. Never use the same password for all of your accounts; in the case that someone was to capture your password, they would be able to access all of your accounts and cause some heavy damage. Here is an easy way to create strong passwords to protect your accounts from hackers.

2. Utilize card protection tools

Did you know that many financial institutions offer card protection tools? This allows you to set rules on where, when, and how your card is used. You can set specific preferences, turn your card on and off, set up alerts and more! Using a tool like this can help protect your card from fraud and give you peace of mind.

3. Purchase items with a specific card

An easy way to protect your money is by using one specific card for all of your online shopping. Placing all of your online shopping on one card can help you track your spending and help you spot any fraudulent charges quickly and easily. Consider opening a separate checking account or credit card designated only for online shopping.

4. Set up text alerts

Preventing fraud is all about being proactive and staying alert. Setting up text alerts for your account can help accomplish this. You can choose from a variety of alert options, such as card transactions, ATM withdrawals, account balance and more. You can have these alerts sent to your email and cell phone, giving you access to 24/7 fraud monitoring.

5. Always log out of accounts and keep information safe

This is an especially important tip to follow if you use a shared or public computer. It’s hard to believe, but a large amount of fraud is implemented through a friend or family member. According to a 2014 Identity Fraud Report, around 847,000 American victims of identity theft knew their thief. Keep passwords, personal information and financial data private and always log out of any account when you are finished with your transaction.

Armed with these tips, you’ll be able to online shop with peace of mind this holiday season. When you’re proactive and alert, you can protect yourself from fraud and identity theft and catch any issues from the beginning.
