That message on your golf ball or your favorite football team's helmet strap may have also been printed there.

Small Business Spotlight: Designer Plastics: Printing What's Next

“What’s next?” is what keeps Randy Mosley, President and CEO of Designer Plastics motivated. And his motivation has been the fuel for his company’s long tenure of success.

Designer Plastics, founded in 1983 in Arab, Alabama, is a printing company at its core. But the printing it does goes way beyond business cards and brochures. They print on plastics, glass, metal, pre-stretched canvas, clothing and so much more. In fact, they joke that if they could fit a person in their one of their digital printers, they could start printing tattoos!

Randy Mosley’s drive to find the next best printing method has led to supplying printed parts and inks for national and international companies. You might be driving a car with parts printed at Designer Plastics, as they supply the printing for many knobs and other car interior parts.

And when you watch college football, you’ll probably be seeing Designer Plastics’ product on the field. They print the helmet straps for several SEC teams. Like to drink out of a Corkcicle container? If it has a logo on it, chances are it was printed at Designer Plastics.

“What’s next” and the motivation to provide excellent quality drove Randy to develop his own ink after lead was pulled from ink formulas.

“Our suppliers just weren’t giving us a great product, so I went on a search for better inks,” said Randy.

The search took him back to his European resources, where he was first introduced to his initial printing process: pad printing. Working with his European contacts, Randy and his team developed their own ink to meet his and his customers’ standards. Knowing the need for quality ink was out there, he created PrismFlex, his company dedicated to pad and screen printing ink development, production and sales.

One special ink they’ve developed has been used on the world’s top selling golf balls for more than a dozen years. Yes, ink produced in Arab, Alabama travels the globe, being a trusted resource for a multi-national company.

This drive to excel often means new equipment. And when Randy needs a new machine, he calls up Redstone Federal Credit Union’s Business team. The relationship started with refinancing a current loan, but has quickly grown to include new equipment loans, a line of credit, checking accounts as well as savings. And the quick and easy wire transfers through Redstone make their international business dealings much more efficient.

“Neil Carville and his team at Redstone have been so supportive of our business, even through some bad times,” said Randy. “They are much more personable than our previous bank. And their quick loan decisions help us stay ahead of the competition.”
