The Acts of Brightness Crews surprised teachers, parents, grandparents and college students who were out shopping for back to school in North Alabama and Middle Tennessee. Crew members paid for all school-related items in the shopping carts, including laptop computers, printers, reams of paper, backpacks and clothing.

Brightness Crews take on Back-to-School

Redstone Federal Credit Union Brightness Crews hit the stores in July to buy school supplies and clothing for unsuspecting shoppers.
The Acts of Brightness Crews surprised teachers, parents, grandparents and college students who were out shopping for back to school in North Alabama and Middle Tennessee. Crew members paid for all school-related items in the shopping carts, including laptop computers, printers, reams of paper, backpacks and clothing.

 “Go pick out a backpack for school and we’ll buy it for you today,” crew member Ian Pinkerton said when explaining the event to a young girl and her mom.

Murfreeboro RAOB StaplesCrews visited stores in Madison, Marshall, Jackson, Morgan, Limestone counties in North Alabama, and Lincoln and Rutherford counties in Tennessee.  

A family of seven were shopping for shoes at the Shoe Dept. in Scottsboro when crew members spotted them.

Tyrone and Tonya Douglas live in New Hope, AL with their five children. All the kids left with new shoes and backpacks.

“With a big family the expenses can add up quickly and we love Redstone and are so grateful for the help today.  Thank you,” said Tyrone.

Athens ROAB At the Office Depot in Athens, a grandmother picked out a new computer and printer for her granddaughter, Hannah Morris.

“My granddaughter is going to be a first-year med student at the University of Mobile. She’s shooting for the stars and you don’t know what this means to us. She deserves so much. She’s worked so hard.”

Hannah joined her grandmother in thanking Redstone.

A second-year school teacher was in tears at the same store in Athens when an Acts of Brightness crew  member purchased supplies for her students.

“It feels good to be appreciated. I buy extra supplies for every student because you really never know when a kid will come in and not have it, “she said.

At the Office Depot in Murfreesboro, the Jett Family were only buying a few ‘must-have’ items because the dad had lost his job the week before.

They have a kindergartner and a 4th grader, but could afford very little. Then, the Brightness Crew showed up.

 Later, the mom posted on Facebook that their youngest son, Benjamin, was so excited about his new school supplies, he could barely sleep the night before school.

“Our family greatly appreciates #RedstoneActsofBrightness generosity.’’  

 In Huntsville, at T-J Maxx, a college student received new clothes for the upcoming school year. “I just came in looking for some clothes and they said, they would pay for them,” one shopper said.

Lucky recipients were encourage to “pass it on.”

“All we ask is one thing, is at some point today or tomorrow you do something nice for someone else,” Ian told an excited family.
