How to find a job this new year

Is 2018 your year to snag that dream job? What’s your game plan? If you think you can simply brush off your old resume, add some new references and you’re good to go – you’re wrong.

A new year calls for updated tactics in your job search. Some of the old techniques still work, like networking and sending thank-you notes. But today’s job search may also include new ideas – like video resumes and personal branding.

For some people, finding a new job is about more than a new title or paycheck, it’s about jumpstarting different experiences. It can also stimulate creativity and ignite a fire in you to grow.

Here are some tips for getting that new job this year:

  • Polish your resume. More than update it, you need to tailor it to the job you are applying for. Keep it to two pages and use the most relevant skills and experiences.
  • Write a strong cover letter. The letter should give hiring managers a glimpse of your background and a look at why you are a good fit for that company.
  • Update and fine tune your LinkedIn account. Your resume and LinkedIn account are living, breathing instruments and should change as often as necessary. There are some things you should be doing on LinkedIn each week.
  • Organize your search. Set aside a time each week to browse job boards or individual company websites.
  • Attend career fairs. They are another way to get face-to-face with recruiters. Check out these local career fairs being held over the next few months.

    • University of Alabama in Huntsville hosts a career fair for UAH students and alumni on Jan. 31, 2018, from 9:30-1 p.m. at the University Fitness Center.
    • Alabama A&M University hosts a career fair on Feb. 22, 2018, from 10-2 p.m. at the Wellness Center.
    • Calhoun Community College hosts a career fair on April 20, 2018, from 10-2 p.m. at its Decatur campus.
    • Hire Tennessee Alumni Career Fair will be held April 5, 2018 at the Janet Ayers Academic Center at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. This career fair serves alumni of these universities: University of Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State University, Belmont University, Lipscomb College and Tennessee State University.
  • Draft Your Elevator Speech. While out networking, forget the comments about the weather. Give your contact a brief, but unmistakable taste of your awesomeness. Your talking points should be short, interesting and leave the listener with a clear idea of where you want to go and what you can offer the right organization.
  • Grow your network. It’s all about relationships. That’s why it is important to attend that incredibly awkward social event even though you don’t know anyone there. Make it a point to leave the event with a commitment to chat on the phone, have lunch or get the kids together for a playdate with someone you met there.
  • Improve your skillset. What’s the trending technology for your profession? How many new assignments have you taken on that required new classes or a training session? Your value to the company should grow over the years, not lessen.
